Gaming Anniversaries February 2- Super C

Super C

Released February 2, 1990- Super C

Super C shot into the Japanese market on this day in 1990. For the Nintendo Famicom!

Super C, also known as Super Contra in other regions is the second entry into Konami’s fantastic Contra series.

The Red Falcon is back, and it’s up to the player to control Mad Dogg and Scorpion to stop him and save the planet. Through fighting their way through five extraordinarily difficult levels.

The game is a combination of platforming, side-scrolling, and shoot-em-up, and in some instances, becomes a bullet hell shooter. The game is absolutely merciless. Players can shoot up, down, left and right and in a diagonal formation. Taking out certain flying enemies will drop power-ups, such as lasers and rocket launchers which will help out a little bit. You only have a couple of lives, and each time you lose one, you also lose all of your power-ups. Fortunately, the Konami Code is used to increase your total life count to 10. But its input is slightly different. Instead of pressing Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start, you simply hit Right, Left, Down, Up, A, B, Start to make it work. This lead to some confusion. But once you got it, you got it. And in this game, any little bit helps.

Super C received generally positive reviews, but it’s not quite as renowned as the original. Still, Nintendo released it instead of Contra on the NES Classic Edition!
