Gaming Anniversaries June 22- S.C.A.T. Special Cybernetic Attack Team (Final Mission)

Final Mission

Released June 22, 1990- S.C.A.T. (Final Mission)

The unfortunately named game S.C.A.T. was released on this day in 1990 for the Nintendo Famicom under the name Final Mission. Developed by Natsume.

Final MissionAlthough the game’s name suggests it, S.C.A.T. is not another shit title. It is a one or two player shooter game that takes place on earth, with the feel of a space shooter.

In fact, it’s meant to be a parody of the 80’s “apocalyptic or judgment day” type films. It does it pretty well also. in the game, you play as either Arnold or Sigourney, both of which are cyborgs developed to be team S.C.A.T. Their mission is to save the world from Alien invasion.

The year is 2029, the city of New York has been destroyed by alien invaders. In its place, aliens built an “Astrotube” that connects the city to a space station. If the aliens aren’t stopped soon, humanity is doomed. It’s up to Cyborg team S.C.A.T. to complete five missions and save the planet.

The team is equipped with a jetpack, as well as cannons that can fire in multiple directions. Additionally, they have just three lives to complete their mission. However, they have unlimited continues.

The game was lauded as being one of the best shooters on the NES. However, due to its late release in Japan and even later in the US, it did not sell well. S.C.A.T. is now of the rarest games for the NES but still definitely worth a playthrough if you can find it,
