Dino Crisis roared into the Japanese region on this day in 2000! For the Sega Dreamcast.
As the story goes, a Doctor is funded by a government agency to research a brand new form of energy. However, the doctor one-day disappears. After writing the whole thing off as a loss, they later discover he is indeed alive and well, and they know his location. The government sends a team of special operatives to retrieve him and his research on a private island. That’s when they discover that there were side effects to his research. Creatures are brought to life from nearly 100 million years ago. And the game really begins. \
A lot like Resident Evil
The gameplay is similar in feel and style to the Resident Evil series. So closely similar in the fact that they are considered sisters to each other. Having also been developed by Capcom. This should come as no surprise, as recycled gameplay is sort of their specialty. That isn’t to say it isn’t a very well made game of course. Although the tank controls may be a little daunting to some players.
More similar to Resident Evil is that the main character will have nearly nothing to start off with. Relying on her wits to get her through while searching for keys and solving unique puzzles to complete each section of the game. This one differs in that the player will rarely find actual supplies such as herbs and ammunition, and will instead find plugs that will open chests. Dino Crisis is completely rendered in 3D. Camera angles will rotate and pan, however, none can be controlled by the player. This can also be sometimes a little infuriating as you may spot something but just can’t seem to get a good look at it.
The enemies in this game are fierce bloodthirsty dinosaurs. Leading to the title “Dino Crisis” of course, and to that end, can follow and dismember the player as well as run through doorways. The game is actually a little terrifying for first-time players. So maybe play it alone with the lights off instead of with your kids!
Reception
The game earned itself some pretty decent scores on the review chain. Leading to an aggregate score of 74%. It’s been called “Resident Evil with Dinosaurs” for all the reasons I’ve stated above.
