Gaming Anniversaries June 17- Blaster Master

Blaster Master

Released June 17, 1988- Blaster Master

Blaster Master found its way to store shelves on this day in 1988 for the Nintendo Famicom. In the Japanese market.

Blaster Master. The classic children’s story turned into a video game. The game is about a boy named Jason who’s best friend, a frog has run away. Or er, hopped as it were. Moreover, the frog became radioactive! It’s up to Jason to get back the freedom loving frog and also, just as an aside, save the planet from the evil Plutonium Boss.

In true children’s story fashion, Jason finds a battle tank! Known as Sofia the Third. Along the way, Jason has to find upgrades to his newly discovered Battle tank, in order to explore deeper areas further in the map.

Blaster Master is a very interesting game. Combining side scrolling battle with some overhead gameplay. Jason can leave his battle tank, leaving him more exposed, however, this is necessary as the tank can’t easily traverse some areas of the game. He is equipped with grenades and a gun in order to stop enemies and bosses along the way. Sadly, this game has no save functionality. Using only a continue feature. Additionally, the game is over when Jason has lost all of his lives. Blaster Master is a fairly long game by Nintendo game standards, so many gamers became enraged by the lack of a password save. Needing to complete the game in one sitting.

How’d it review?

Blaster Master is a fairly long game by Nintendo game standards, so many gamers became enraged by the lack of a password save. Needing to complete the game in one sitting.

Nonetheless, the game enjoyed moderate success in the west, however, it did not sell well in Japan. Meaning that no sequel will be planned. However, a version of Blaster Master found it’s way to the GameBoy a few years later and the GameBoy Color. The game also had a recent release on the Nintendo Switch console due to fan demand, entitled Blaster Master Zero in 2017.
