Is the AtariBox Atari’s version of the NES Classic?

Atari reveals more details about its AtariBox console.

During E3 week, Atari revealed its AtariBox Console. More details have emerged about what it might be.

We’re still hungry for more details. To that end, Atari sent out an email with a few more details on what the AtariBox looks like. Including two new finishes for the console. One will be released in a sleek black and red finish, and another for more old school fans with a wood grain finish. In the email, the company states “Our objective is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.” With what it looks like, it seems they’re already off to a good start.

The new console features ribbed lines, a raised back and a front panel in either glass or wood grain with LED lights that will glow beautifully through the material. There will be 4 USB ports on the back, an SD card reader and the console will have HDMI support. 

Atari states that they plan to feature classic games and “current content”. One can only hope that the system will allow users to download games on the SD card or perhaps some form of internal storage through a download service. Perhaps letting players try out games like Roller Coaster Tycoon alongside ports of Combat or Asteroid. Only time will tell what the AtariBox will be capable of. For now, the console appears to be the companies answer to the NES Classic or SNES Classic edition. An additional statement from them reads “We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring this to life, and to listen closely to the Atari community feedback as we do so.”
