Gaming Anniversaries October 6- Super Hang-On

Super Hang On

Released October 6, 1989- Super Hang On

Super Hang-On raced into the Japanese market on this day in 89′. For the Sega Mega Drive!

Super Hang OnSuper Hang-On is the sequel to the successful game on the Sega Master System, HangOn.

While Hang-On was successful mostly because it was packed in with thousands of Master System consoles, it gave gamers a taste of what to expect from Sega in the coming years.

The game plays much the same as the original, you ride a motorcycle through a series of courses while avoiding other racers and hazards along the way. However, there are some key differences. In this one, players are given a choice between four courses. Additionally, this one has a turbo feature. Upon reaching the top speed of 280km/h, a turbo button is enabled. Pressing it will allow the bike to reach a speed of 320 km/h. Which is absolutely dizzying.

The game is played in 2d and from a back on perspective. So the courses don’t tilt along with the turns of the bike. Moreover, other racers on the tracks aren’t really important. You’re not technically racing them, like in other games of this type. They can be considered hazards. Because when you hit one, you lose control of the bike and your top speed will go way down until you can hit it once again.

Super Hang-On was definitely another very successful entry into the short-livedĀ series. However, Sega released it on multiple systems. Including a short release on the arcade known as “Limited Edition Hang-On” and featured a full-size bike players will ride on and steer with. Which made for some even more interesting gameplay.

Personally, Super Hang-On is one of my favoriteĀ “Racing” games of the 16-bit era. What did you think of it? Let us know in the comments down below!
