Its Official! No More NES Classic Systems

NES Classic

NES Classic Edition is no more

Nintendo announced rather abruptly today that the month of April may in fact be your last chance to obtain an NES Classic Edition. That is if you don’t plan on buying one from the scalpers.

NES Classic Edition

In a statement to IGN today the company stated

“Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize.  Have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”

What Went Wrong for the NES Classic?

The system was plagued with supply issues right from the beginning with some retailers only receiving as few as 6 units per store on the November 11 release day. Making it extremely and increasingly scarce in the wild.

Additionally, Nintendo provided this statement

“NES Classic Edition wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product. However, due to high demand, we did add extra shipments to our original plans.”

High demand is right. I’ve only seen one in the wild.

In January, Nintendo announced they sold 1.5 Million units of the plug and play system in North America.

As of today. The NES classic edition is still selling for a ludicrous amount of money on both Amazon and on eBay. Although it has calmed a little bit. Its yet to be seen what the asking price will soon be on these ill fated collectors items.

Nintendo has yet to make an announcement on the future availability of the system worldwide in Europe and Asia.

If you managed to grab one, count yourself among the lucky few. If you just wanna take a look at what you missed check out my video featuring both the NES Classic Edition and the Famicom Mini!
