In a surprise move, Nintendo today announced they will be republishing the classic emulator box in the summer of 2018.

SNES Classic EditionThat’s right, you’ll now get another chance to own the console that so many just couldn’t get a hold of.

Nintendo today announced that the NES Classic Edition will hit stores once again the summer of 2018. Completely back tracking on their earlier decision to stop production of the system. Hopefully, a few more fans will be able to obtain the tiny collector’s item,

Additionally, Nintendo announced that earlier plans to stop production of the SNES classic at the end of 2017, will now be pushed later into 2018 in order to help meet the demand. Which at the moment remains extraordinarily high for the micro console.

While the SNES Classic Edition hasn’t even released yet, and won’t until September 29, Stock is already scarce. Preorders have been opened, sold out and canceled all the same day. Leading to widespread speculation that problems with keeping it available for consumers will repeat. Much like the NES Classic Edition.

It remains to be seen what will come of these two announcements, however, we should remain skeptical. Nintendo doesn’t have a great track record with keeping things around for all too long.

The NES Classic Edition had 30 great games, with the ability to be modded to install additional games to the hardware. Perhaps that was one reason that the Big N canceled it. Meanwhile, the SNES Classic Edition will have 21 games installed. Including the never before released Star Fox 2.
