MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat

Released July 24, 1995- MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat

MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat hit the US market on this day in 1995. For DOS computers.

MechWarrior 2 is a simulation type action game.

MechWarrior 2: 31st Century CombatPlayers must first choose to become a part of a clan. Choosing between either Clan Wolf or Clan Jade Falcon, and take the lead in battles on planets named after the places found in the fictional novels. The goals in each battle vary from Search and Destroy to all out strike missions.

Between missions, players get to customize their Mech with new weapons, armor, and gear, as well as heat sinks. Adding a layer of gameplay that is rarely seen in other games of the era. As your mech may over heat or run out of weaponry during battle. Rendering it useless for a time. Additionally, players can over ride the auto shutdown caused by heat. However, this isn’t wise, as the weapons themselves can begin to explode, causing massive damage to yourself.

The game also features several extra modes. Such as an advanced mode requiring you to control the legs, arms, and torso of your Mech independently, which proved for me to be very difficult.

MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat also includes a player vs player networked multiplayer mode to play against your friends.

In 1994, the game was scheduled for release in October. However, an almost total turnover in staff on the development team at Activision caused some considerable delays. Leaving it to be released in July of 1995. However, despite all of this, the game went on to become one of the best-received simulation games of the time. Leading it to a further release for Windows 95 and later again on the PlayStation with an overhaul in gameplay to include more traditional arcade style graphics. Further, an expansion pack came out a little later. Adding new mechs, modes and a whole new clan to play. Known as MechWarrior 2: Ghost Bears Legacy.
