Capcom’s iconic fighting game Street Fighter II released on this day in 1992. For the Super Famicom in Japan.
Players could choose one of eight playable fighters. Including Ryu, Ken, E.Honda, Chun Li, Zangief, Guile, Blanka, and Dhalsim. Each fighter had their own unique moves and abilities such as Ryu’s Hadouken and Chun Li’s Cannon Drill. Additionally, each match will take place in a different part of the world. where the opposing character hails from. Each character you play as will face off against the other 7 characters. Finally culminating in four boss fights, ending with the evil M.Bison.
Street Fighter II is oft credited with starting the fighting game boom of the 90’s, it’s unmitigated success led to several rebalanced versions of the same game and many sequels. The game is in fact still built upon to this day, with the most recent release being Ultra Street Fighter II on the Nintendo Switch.
