Released February 6, 1989- The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer dropped in the Japanese market on this day in 1989. For the Nintendo Famicom!
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is exactly what you’d expect. A basic p[latforming game based on the adventures of Tom Sawyer. Well, sort of. Its based on the DREAMS of the adventures of Tom Sawyer. Makes sense right?
The game starts with young time sleeping during class. You play through multiple levels of his dreams, such as navigating through the forests, the Mississippi River and through haunted houses. Along the way, Tom faces giant octopi and multiple other ferocious enemies. Along with he standard barrage of smaller enemies.
The controls are fairly straightforward. That is to say, easy to master, however, the game is actually really hard for something that looks so easy. The graphics style could’ve been fleshed out better and the music is plain. Leaving me to think that perhaps this was a rush job on an already established idea in order to cash in on the literary works of Mark Twain. Still, the game does have its charm, and its great for short pick up and play bursts of action. To that end, we recognize it today for what it is.
